For auction is an Athearn HO custom painted and detailed PRR GP9 slug shell. Nice paint job, nice detailing and work on the cab and other detail parts. You will receive exactly what is shown so please check the pics. Check back, many more listings coming. I do reduce shipping on multiple purchases. Of simply removing the truck worm and geartrain and accepting the slug as a 'dummy' unit. Short answer being, building a slug is not too difficult, as long as you know what slug you're aiming for in the first place.;-) Happy Modelling, Aim to improve, Prof Klyzlr. PS even for the 'dummy' slugs, add a TCS FL4 decoder + SMD LEDs.

Thunder Bay used them coupled to the short nose of a rebuilt chop nosed GP9 set up to run long hood forward. I believe they were called HBU (hump booster unit DC switcher) or YBU (yard booster unit for road switchers, GP38-2 then GP9R mothers). Not to be confused with another class of later CN rebuilds using GP9 frames that are longer.

Ogden's 75th. anniversary was held in 1988.
To commemorate the event, Odgen Shop employees decided to assemblea lasting monument.
Originally called 'Oggie' (for Ogden), the monument has since beenrenamed SPIKE.

SPIKE is 27 feet tall and constructed from various pieces offreight car and locomotive parts.
The body is a boiler, the head and ears are gears and the arms andhands are couplers.
He is holding a locomotive engine crankshaft in his right hand.
The monument stands within the parking lot at the entrance to theShops (now Alstom), in the 7200 block of
Ogden Road in Calgary.

The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive
built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in the United States,and General Motors Diesel in Canada between January, 1954, and August,1963. US production ended in December, 1959, while an additional thirteen
units were built in Canada, including the last two in August, 1963.Power was provided by an EMD 567C
sixteen-cylinder engine which generated 1,750 horsepower

Many rebuilt GP9s remain in service today with shortline railroadsand industrial operators. Some remain in rebuilt form on some major ClassI railroads, as switcher locomotives. Canadian Pacific Railway and CanadianNational Railway still have many in their fleets in 2012 as switcher locomotives.

CN 7243 at Thornton Yard (Vancouver), taken from a
moving train on May 4th, 2009.

The unit is a remanufactured GP9RM
(for remanufactured) , whose former number was
CN 4214 and then CN 4596 with a high nose.
Its companion CN 212 'slug', is a booster unit for
yard and transfer service “cut down” from a former
7200 Series GP9RM at the CN Pointe St-Charles
shops in Montreal. Both of these units were
originally built around 1958-1959.

CN 7259 and booster unit CN 236 along with CN 7304, caughtin Vancouver’s Thornton Yard while passing
through, eastbound on board the Rocky Mountaineer
on May 10th, 2009.

Both the 7259 and slug 236 are GP9 units, built in
1958-59 and remanufactured at the CN Pointe
St-Charles in Montreal. CN 7259 was the former
4259 with high hood, till about 1990 when it was remanufacturedand CN 236 was converted around
1988. CN 7304 meanwhile is a model SW1200RM.
Its old number was CN 1390 and it was
remanufactured in 1987.

The two largest buyers of the SW1200 were CN,
which owned 208 and CP which purchased 72, most
of which have have either been scrapped by both
railways or sold as in-plant switchers to private

This view shows clearly the difference in height
between booster unit CN 236 and its leading unit,
CN 7259. Both are GP9, built by General Motors,
sometime in 1958-1959.

Because the booster unit or “slug” is low, it allows
the operator to see past it, during switching. CN 236
was converted to a slug in 1988, from a GP9 unit in
the CN 7200-series. The locomotive one on the right
(whose numbers can’t quite be read - except 305) has obviously seenbetter days.

CN 4105 and 4101 lead a St Lawrence Valley Railway Society fantripconsist along the St Lawrence River between Québec and La Malbaiein the mid 70s.The freight-only line which opened at the beginningof the 19th Century didn't get much traffic anymore and was aboutto be abandoned. CN subsequently sold the line to a variety of concernsover the years .
Dinner trains and other ventures plied this picturesque area.

A lashup of Geeps 4925, 4924 and 4928 in the High Bridge in Georgia,Vermont in the mid 70s, during a fan trip with
the St. Lawrence Valley Railway Society (CRHA).
The units are now heading back to Montreal with us.
Georgia is just south of St. Albans VT, a few miles beyond
the Canadian border.

In a runpast, most passenger are off-loaded at a
picturesque spot, the train backs up about a mile,
then rolls past the spectators, who then reboard the
train after the run.
The practice isn't done much anymore, due to
insurance concerns and the high price of fuel.
